Frequently asked questions

About the YO Home Sperm Test

What is the YO Home Sperm Test?

The YO Home Sperm Test is an FDA-cleared device that measures Motile Sperm Concentration (MSC), the number of moving sperm per milliliter of semen. Motility is a key factor in male fertility, since only moving sperm can reach and fertilize an egg. YO works with the YO app on your smartphone to give you a live video of your sample, motility data, and a result report in minutes.

How accurate is the YO Home Sperm Test?

The YO test has been clinically validated against standard laboratory semen analysis. It is FDA-cleared for home use and reports your MSC against WHO reference ranges, the standard used by fertility clinics worldwide.

How is YO different from a lab semen analysis?

A full lab semen analysis measures multiple parameters (volume, concentration, motility, morphology, pH). YO focuses on motile sperm concentration, a key indicator of male fertility. YO is a screening tool. If results are low or you have concerns, a lab analysis can give a complete picture.

Using the YO test

How long should I abstain from ejaculation before testing?

The WHO recommends 2–7 days of abstinence before semen analysis. Less than 2 days can lower sperm count; more than 7 days can reduce motility. For consistent results across multiple YO tests, aim for the same abstinence period each time.

Can I use YO more than once?

The YO device is reusable. Each test requires a new single-use YO Test Kit, which includes the slide, pipette, and powder. You can buy refill kits separately.

Why does my YO result vary between tests?

Sperm count and motility naturally vary day to day. Factors that affect results include sleep, recent illness, stress, time since last ejaculation, hot baths or saunas, and tight clothing. For the most reliable picture, take at least 2 tests, 2–4 weeks apart.

Results and next steps

My YO result is Low. What should I do?

A single low result is not a diagnosis. Sperm production takes about 72 days, so factors from the past 2–3 months can affect a sample. Retest in 2–4 weeks. If results stay low across multiple tests, consider talking to your healthcare provider. They can order a full lab semen analysis and check other parameters.

Can I improve my sperm health?

Sperm production happens over about 2–3 months, so lifestyle factors during that time can affect your results. The American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) suggests:

  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Avoid excessive heat (hot tubs, saunas, laptop on lap)
  • Limit alcohol
  • Don't smoke
  • Manage stress
  • Get enough sleep

Talk to your doctor before making major changes.

How does sperm health affect couples trying to conceive?

Male factors contribute to roughly half of fertility challenges, according to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM). Sperm count and motility are key parts of the picture, alongside female factors like ovulation timing and egg quality. For couples, tracking sperm health and ovulation together gives a fuller view.
